The Fundamentals of Music

doctoral degrees

Boethius' ancient text, The Fundamentals of Music, is a Greek composition. It was written approximately 500 AD. Boethius did not actually read the Greek writings until the 15th centuries, but the text shows the mathematics behind the tuning systems, the moral nature of certain modes, as well as the history and origins of plainchant.

Music elements

Music's elements give songs their soul and emotion. Human connection is perhaps the most important element of music. A piece of music can transport the listener to another dimension. Artists have a responsibility to pay attention to how each element works together, and then use that information to make their music better.

Harmony

Harmony refers musical tones. This relationship is easily recognized by the human ear. This concept can be expressed using simple scientific methods. Pythagoras is the first person to prove this relationship. In his famous experiment, he strung a string and then plucked it. He found the distance between each note using an easy mathematic ratio by divising it.

Pitch

The fundamental frequency for a musical tone refers to the lowest frequency that is heard. The ear can recognize this frequency as a pitch. This frequency is represented as a displaystyle (also known under Hertz).

Rhythm

Rhythm is the organization of music's various elements. It can occur in accompaniment or melody, and it is expressed in a combination short and long time periods, also known as measurements. For example, a song using a simple meter sounds straight. However, one that uses a compound meters sounds "swung", "changed" or "changed".

Texture

Different textures can be achieved by musicians using a variety techniques. One technique that is used to achieve different textures is resonation. This technique creates sounds by varying the density of various vocal types. There are many factors that influence texture. These include the size and tone of a melody, its dynamics and articulation. Another important factor is rhythmic complex, which refers to the variety in the accompaniment. Music is not limited to one style.

Articulation

Music performance is incomplete without articulation. There are many forms of articulation. Each one has its own characteristics. These characteristics include loudness and timbre as well as intonation and envelope characteristics. The most prominent characteristic of articulation refers to the length. It is what determines how long a note will last. A string player might accent a note by playing it faster and harder than usual. This produces a louder sound.
